A LITTLE HISTORY

Although the ONNO BEHRENDS business began in Germany the year before Captain Cook came to Australia it was only in the 1880's that the company gave up its other interests to concentrate on TEA.

At Norden, in OSTFRIESLAND, (Northern Germany where FRIESAN COWS come from!) the company established its tea blending and packing plant. A reputation was quickly gained for the strong black teas favoured in the region. The company also developed the fruit and herbal teas favoured in Europe and its reputation grew.

O.T.G
In 1907 LAURENS JANSSEN founded the OSTFRIESCHE TEE GESELLSCHAFT (O.T.G) and this company grew, all the while specialising in TEA, until the 1970's when they took over GROSCH TEE (MILFORD TEA) and several vitamin and Diabetic Food Companies. In 1988 OTG took over ONNO BEHRENDS and in the early 1990's several other tea companies.

OTG is now one of the leading fruit herbal and black tea companies in Europe.

IN AUSTRALIA
ONNO BEHRENDS came to Australia in 1978 when ABEL LEMON began importing the HERBAL TEA. At the time, Herbal teas were in their infancy in this country, but as the consumer demand has grown over the years, so the ONNO BEHRENDS brand has grown too. Today ONNO BEHRENDS is still a HEALTH FOODS brand and maintaining quality standards that are hard to match. This is why ONNO BEHRENDS is one of the leading Premium Brands in Australia today!

Why do people drink HERBAL TEA? Well, there is no simple answer. Some people drink it for

NATURES HEALTH DRINK
When I tell people that I drink HERBAL TEA, or I offer them a cup instead of coffee, a common reaction is "OH, how can you drink that, it tastes awful!" This used to disappoint me, but I now know that these reactions come from usually a single bad experience, and if I take the time and trouble to explain HOW to enjoy herbal tea, I often convert them!

The FIRST STEP is to select which flavour you want. Are you looking for HERBAL TEA to just enjoy? OR are you looking for some form of benefit?

Here are some of the more popular flavours and why I enjoy them.

ONNO BEHRENDS CAMOMILE
An old favourite! Camomile tea makes a delicious soothing drink to unwind you after a hard day. Great at bedtime to relax you but also I find it good if you feel nauseous or have an upset stomach. (Italian's have been known to cool the tea and when lukewarm, to put it in the baby's bottle!)

ONNO BEHRENDS ROSEHIP
Rosehip tea is famous for its reviving taste and refreshing properties. Often taken by convalescents and to provide relief from the common cold; Rosehips are rich in VITAMIN C.

ONNO BEHRENDS PEPPERMINT
This delicious tea is excellent for helping digestion and makes an excellent after meal drink. It is also great served chilled over ice cubes, garnished with lemon.
                                       
ONNO BEHRENDS FENNEL
Its distinctive aniseed flavour stimulates the appetite and improves digestion. It can help relieve wind and cramps, and in larger quantities can act as a mild laxative.

ONNO BEHRENDS LEMONGRASS
The delicate flavour of lemongrass is best brought out when served hot. A delicious variation is to stir in a spoonful of honey. Often used by sufferers of colds and sinus conditions, Lemongrass has a subtle aroma and delicate flavour.

ONNO BEHRENDS LEMON GREEN TEA
A traditional CHINA GREEN TEA with a subtle lemon flavour.  Rich in ANTI-OXIDENT this delicious is fantastic with meals or as an after dinner drink.

The SECOND STEP is to select a BRAND; I choose ONNO BEHRENDS as the teabags are packed under hygienic conditions. The teabags are all unbleached paper to help the environment and the boxes are recyclable.

The THIRD STEP is to BREW the tea. I make mine in a cup but you can use a mug or a teapot. The rules are simple. Use fresh water, that is boiling "hard", and pour over the teabag. LEAVE FOR 5 MINUTES. Don't be tempted to wait only 2 or 3 minutes, you will not get the full flavour. You must wait 5 minutes!

STEP FOUR, SIMPLE; sit back and enjoy!
